Shopify vs Custom E-Commerce: Which Is Right for You?

Not “which is better” — what your business needs in 3 years.

Shopify vs Custom E-Commerce: Which Is Right for You?

Before we answer which to choose — we ask in return: what is your e-commerce goal in five years?

That's not a philosophical question. It's practical, because Shopify and a custom e-commerce solution solve different problems. The right choice depends on your sales volume, product complexity, growth plans, and how much control you want over the platform.

Shopify — for whom and why. Shopify is the world's most popular e-commerce platform, used by millions of merchants. It's subscription-based (Basic plan from ~$32/month, Advanced ~$399/month), quick to launch, and securely managed. Shopify advantages: launch in 2–4 weeks, built-in payment processing, extensive App Store (logistics, email, loyalty), automatic updates and security, large developer community. Shopify disadvantages: monthly fees and transaction fees — especially outside Shopify Payments coverage, limited customisation of the checkout experience, data lives on Shopify's servers, and as you scale costs can grow significantly.

Custom e-commerce — for whom and why. A custom solution (whether headless Shopify + Next.js or fully standalone) gives you complete control over design, business logic, data, and performance. Advantages: unlimited design freedom, best possible speed, custom business logic such as product configurators, subscription models, complex filters, no ongoing platform fees, and your data is yours. Disadvantages: higher upfront development cost (from €4,500, often €8,000–15,000+), longer development time (6–12 weeks), and you'll need a developer for future changes.

Our recommendation. For a starter with 20–200 products: Shopify. For a growing brand with 200+ products, specific business logic, or high brand standards: headless Shopify.

Quick decision guide. Start with Shopify if: you have under 500 products, fast launch is a priority, or your budget is under €5,000. Choose a custom solution if: you have over 500 products, need a specific configuration tool, speed and conversion are business-critical, or you're planning international growth with complex localisation needs.

Neither option is universally better. The best platform is the one that fits your business model today and doesn't box you in tomorrow. If you're not sure — talk to us before committing.
